OUR HISTORY
As the communities of Johnstown and Milliken have grown and changed over the years, so has Hays Market. Hays Market embodies many of the qualities that people love about small towns. At Hays Market you are likely to run into your neighbors, your friends, and your pastor. It is more than just a grocery store; it is a local gathering place.
Purchased by Thurman and Louisa Hays in 1929, Hays Market began as Hays Mercantile and carried everything from horse collars to dry goods. After just two years the store was relocated to a larger building owned by Mrs. Ruth Parish. That building, which is now the present Johnstown Clothing, was rented to Mr. and Mrs. Hays for $50 a month. The third location came when Chet Hays (Son of Thurman and Louisa) purchased the Johnstown Locker Plant, now Johnstown Liquor, at a public auction. The grand opening was in February 1958. At that time, Johnstown's population was listed as 897. Hays Mercantile then became Hays Market and employed seven people. In 1996 Rick (son of Chet Hays) and his wife Sally moved to its fourth and present location. After an 8000 square foot addition completed in 2005 the store is now run by Rick and Sally's three sons Ryan, Neal, and Russell. In September of 2001 the Hays family purchased a second store in the town of Berthoud.
Over almost 80 years, Hays Market is still a family business and is in its fourth generation. Because it has stayed in the family, the values that started Hays Market have remained strong. Hays Market is here to serve the community with good customer service, a friendly staff, complementary carry-outs, and special services for senior citizens, schools, and churches.
